Today I was looking at some Coates estate papers online and spent some time sorting out family connections for Ada E. Coates (1853-1877). Here is a direct link to her estate papers online, which include images 373-386. Ada was the daughter of Joseph Coates (1808-1873) and Mary Elizabeth Lawrence (1815-1876). It's always interesting to find the estate papers of an unmarried woman and to learn about property she may have owned and family connections. Ada's brother R. Thompson Coates administered the estate. Ada's estate papers turned up 3 nieces that I hadn't been aware of. One of the nieces was Charlotte E. Thomson, daughter of Presbyterian Rev. Archibald Thomson who married Ada's sister Sarah Jane Coates (1835-1865). In 1878, Charlotte was between the ages of 14 and 21 and living in Madrid New York. Archibald is not buried in the Old Burying Ground in Amherst with his wife Sarah and a son Haller Thomson, who died at age 15, so perhaps he stayed in New York. The other two nieces, Carrie Humphrey (1866-) and Emma Humphrey (1869-1891), were daughters of Ada's sister Salina Coates (1838-1876) and her husband Harmon Humphrey of Sackville NB.
