Thomas Ripley and Jane Bulmer's Property
An Ernest Coates hand-drawn map which came into my possession in May 2014 courtesy of Gordon Ripley shows a property that was originally owned by "Wm Ripley (son of Robert 1st-Thomas-Enoch-Clare-Donald Ripley (who sold out)". In Fenwick 1778-1978, p. 10, Myrtle Chappell says that "William's son, Thomas, married Jane Bulmer and settled in Nappan on property later taken over by Thomas' son Enoch, then by Enoch's son Clair, later by Clair's son Donald, who then sold to the Marsden family, who still reside there."
Thomas Ripley (1806-1886) was the son of William Ripley and Hannah Coates. According to the sources I have quoted, the property then passed to Thomas’s son Enoch C. Ripley (1850-1926) and then to Clarence "Clair" J. Ripley (1885-1962) and Clarence’s son Donald Clair Ripley (1918-2008). It is now owned by a different family.
In his will of 1866, Thomas left the property on which he was then living to his son Enoch. (see Estate Files #1710-#1892 on this website.) The house on the property is certainly over 100 years old so it's possible that Thomas Ripley and Jane Bulmer lived in the home. Their descendants definitely did. An area resident remembered cutting wood for Clair Ripley and said the property extended back almost to Chignecto. Thomas Ripley's son George owned the house next door. Thomas's will also indicates that he owned a large number of properties on which his other sons were already settled.
The 1873 A. F. Church map does have a T. Ripley living just south of J. Roach and R. Roach in Maccan and north of the 3 Blinkhorn families. Thomas Ripley (1806-1886) and family are listed on the 1871 census next to a Robert Roach and near a Thomas Roach. The Roach properties are where the Stiles B&B is located today and Thomas's property is a few doors down. The Blinkhorn properties formed the northern border of William's 420 acre DesBarres purchase but they are south of the B&B and Thomas's property, so I believe that Thomas's property was too far north to have been part of the William Ripley's original purchase.
On 23 Feb 1847, Thomas Ripley purchased 120 acres in Nappan from John Roach and his wife Amelia for 625 pounds. (Deed Book U, p. 344). The property is described as follows:
"Beginning at John Sharp line, at the edge of the marsh and upland, from thence running forty degrees east seventy three chains, thence North fifty two east , twelve chains, thence north forty west eighty two chains, to a crop ditch, thence following a ditch bank north seventy one west, , five chains, thence north fourteen west six chains and sixty four links to a ditch bank, near a road thence following a ditch bank southwesterly course to the Creek of the said John Sharp line, thence following the different course of the said line to the place of beginning."
On 5 Oct 1858, Thomas Ripley purchased an additional 12 acres from Robert Blenkhorn for 120 pounds. This property lay west of the road that adjoined land he already owned and properties owned by Silas Barnes and John Sharpe. (Deed Book FF, p. 165) Most likely, the property purchased from John and Amelia Roach was his homestead. It has already been established that the Blenkhorn property lay south of the Roach properties but north of the original homestead of Thomas Ripley's father William.
On the 1861 census, Thomas Ripley is listed next to a John Roach and Silas Barnes, but I cannot see a Sharp listed. On the 1871 census, Thomas Ripley is listed next to a Robert Roach and his wife Ruth. A descendant of Thomas and Jane mentioned that he had heard the property went back to Enoch but didn't know that Thomas had owned it. Later deeds for sales by Enoch, Clair, or Donald might also mention earlier ownership.
According to his father William Ripley's will, Thomas should have inherited 1/3 of William's original estate. However, it would seem that sons Robert and James took possession of the entire original 420-acre purchase. Perhaps they bought out Thomas's share.
