Isabella's Loan to Thomas Coates
On 10 Oct 1800 Isabella Ripley of Amherst made an agreement with Thomas Coates of Maccan. (Deed Book E, p. 81) In the agreement, Thomas pledged to pay Isabella 100 pounds with interest of 6 pounds per centum per annum prior to 10 Oct 1801 and he put up several properties as collateral. These included 1 piece of Marshland, 3 2-acre marsh lots known as the common lots, and 1 20 acre piece of land previously purchased from John Dougherty. These properties were all located in Amherst and they are more fully described in the deed. This is likely a new loan by Isabella as there were no debts owed by Thomas Coates listed in Robert's Will Inventory. On 28 Feb 1811 Thomas's son Robert Coates requested of Charles Baker that the mortgage be cancelled, the money having all been paid (Deed Book E, p. 83).
In the estate accounts of William Pipes Jr. who died in 1804, there is also a payment to Isabella Ripley of 6 pounds for interest (Will Book A, p. 315).
