Smith Road Southern Section: Lots 10-15 Shipley, Smith, and Keiver
In 1837, Isabella (Cochran) Ramsay and her husband sold Lots 10-15, as described on a plan made by William Moffat, to Cornelius Smith and John Keiver (Lot 15), Hannah (Shipley) Hunter (Lot 14), Joseph Shipley (Lot 13), William Shipley (Lot 12), Henry Ripley Shipley (Lot 11) and James and James Jr. Shipley (Lot 10). In 1842, the Shipley Lots 10, 11, 12, and 13 were sold to William Humphrey of Maccan. These properties are described in more detail below, starting from east to west. Joseph Shipley, William Shipley, Henry Ripley Shipley, and James Shipley Jr. were all children of James Shipley Sr. (1788-1874) and his wife Isabella Ripley (1870). James Shipley Sr. was also the brother of Dorothy Shipley 1779-1864) who had married John Smith, known as "widow Smith" in many of the deeds.
Lot 15 Cornelius Smith and John Keiver
In 1837 Isabella Ramsay and others sold a property of 14 3/4 acres to Cornelius Smith and John Keiver known as Lot 15 on the 1837 plan made by William Moffat. The property description began near the southwest corner of the lot "near an abideaux on the Nappan River marked 14 and 15 thence north eleven and one half degrees east to a stake marked 14 and 15 at the upland of land in possession of Widow Smith thence south seventy three degrees east on the line of the said upland two chains twenty three links thence north 77 1/2 east on said line twelve chains sixty six links to a stake thence south seventeen degrees east on the said line five chains seventy links to a stake thence south sixty nine degrees west on said line to a stake four chains ten links thence south nineteen degrees west on said line until it comes to the aforesaid River Nappan thence down the said River by its different courses to the place of beginning." (Deed Book O, p. 281).
This is probably Cornelius Read Smith (1809-1888) brother of Francis Caleb Smith and son of John Smith and Dorothy Shipley. Cornelius was married to Jane Keiver (1811-1871), so John Keiver was likely his brother-in-law John Lodowich Keiver (1815-1891).
