Lot R
1830 Heirs of Harriet Cochran Sold Lot R to Alexander and James Stewart
Thomas and Jane Cochran's daughter Harriet never married. She died in 1829 in Halifax, and in 1830 her brothers sold a property she had received from her father's estate and subsequently devised to them. The property was designated as Lot 10 Letter R on a plan prepared in 1826 by Thomas Logan. The boundaries were described as follows: "Beginning at a spruce tree on the Main Post Road from River Philip to Amherst aforesaid thence to run South 64 degrees 30" West 66 chains and twelve links more or less to a poplar tree thence north 22 degrees west 33 chains and 4 links across said River Nappan to a Spruce Tree, thence north 64 degrees 30" east 66 chains and 26 links to a stake on the said road, then south 22 degrees East thirty three chains and 10 links across the Nappan River Bridge so called to the place of beginning being Lot number ten Letter R ... containing two Hundred and twenty two acres and ten poles more or less..."
The Main or Old Post Road, now known as the Cobequid Road (Hwy 204), formed the eastern boundary of the original Denson Grant and Lot R. Lot R made up most of the southeast quarter of the original upland lots and included an area now known as Brookdale.
In 1833 Alexander and James Stewart sold this property to Thomas Gray (Deed Book M, p. 242).
In 1849, Samuel Gourley acquired Lot R from High Sheriff Joshua Chandler in a court-ordered sale to settle a debt owed by Thomas Gray to Alexander Stewart. (Deed Book V, p. 408)
In 1854, Samuel Gourley transferred Lot R to his son Amos and daughter Annie. (Deed Book Y, 260)
