Will of Isabella Beane (1743-1830)
I was not aware that Isabella Beane Ripley had made a will until I discovered a transcription on page 2 of the Appendix and Corrections section of a Genealogy prepared by Ernest Coates in 1979. The will book and page numbers are not indicated and there are no other estate papers mentioned.
The will is dated 20 March 1830 and it was proved 14 June 1830. Isabella makes the following bequests:
"to my eight children Viz: Thomas Ripley, Henry Ripley, Mary Read, Robert Ripley, Elizabeth Pugsley, William Ripley, John Ripley, Esther Donkin, forty pounds each"
"to my daughter Jane Coates I give and bequeath the sum of sixty-two pounds, also all my household furniture and the gold ring excepting what is mentioned hereafter"
"also my four granddaughters that are called by my name…five pounds"
"also to my grandchildren Thomas Coates, James Coates, Elizabeth Embree, Hood Coates, John Coates, and Joseph Coates, the sum of five pounds each"
"to Robert Coates the sum of ten pounds"
"to my daughter Mary Read my black silk cloak"
"to my grand daughter Jane Coates …the hardwood table, 1/2 dozen cups and saucers and cream pot, 1/2 doz silver teaspoons, one large looking glass, also the best bed I have with one pair of blankets, one pair of sheets, with curtains, bolsters, pillows"
"my other bed and bedding …to my grandson Robert Coates"
"my wearing apparel to be equally divided amongst my four daughters"
James Coates was appointed sole executor. Witnesses were Robert Oldfield and Joseph Coates. Isabella signed with her mark.
Family trees for Robert Ripley and Isabella Beane usually list 10 children. 9 were still living in 1830. The mysterious Margaret Horton, who received a bequest in Robert's will but was not designated as "daughter" in his will was not mentioned in Isabella's.
The four granddaughters who were named after Isabella were:
Isabella Ripley (1789-1870), wife of James Shipley, daughter of Henry Ripley and Mary Fawcett
Isabella Bean Ripley (1796-1836), wife of Amos Brown Pipes, daughter of William Ripley and Hannah Coates
Isabella Read (1808-1890), wife of Nicholas Kiever, daughter of Mary Ripley and Robert Read
Isabella Ripley (1812-1875) wife of Robert Embree, daughter of John Ripley and Margaret Donkin
All of the other grandchildren mentioned in the will are the children of Jane Ripley and Robert Coates. Isabella's grand-daughter Elizabeth had married Samuel Embree. Granddaughter Jane Coates did not marry George Black until 1831 but it looks as though Isabella wanted to help her set up house. The childrens' father Robert Coates had died in 1817 at age 44 when several of the children were still very young. It's possible that Isabella then lived with her widowed daughter Jane and grandchildren until her own death.
