Grant of Robert Ripley and Elizabeth O'Brien
John Ripley's son Robert Ripley (1800-1853) was married first to Elizabeth O'Brien and second to Isabella Tait. A Robert Ripley and William Ripley obtained several grants northeast of the Moses Delesdernier grant which are adjacent to Tate grants. This property is closer to Mt. Pleasant. The size of Robert Ripley's grant was 200 acres. The road that cuts through the corner of Robert's grant is just off Mt. Pleasant Road and is today called Ripley 15 Loop. According to an Ernest Coates paper (05-050-04-R04#1314) "In 1818 ROBERT RIPLEY petitioned for land in Cumberland, he stated that he owned 500 acres of land, he was a native of Yorkshire, England and has a wife and four children, the eldest of whom is thirteen years old, in 1827 he got a grant of 200 acres at River Philip, N.S." The first Robert mentioned by Ernest Coates refers to first generation Robert Ripley who was married to Jane Rushton. This grant application was turned down, so I believe the Robert who received the 200-acre grant in River Philip was John Ripley's son Robert. On 28 Jul 1828, Robert Ripley received a grant of 200 acres. (Grant Book N, p. 57. Family Search Film 8194842 Img 892.)
On 1 Dec 1828, Robert Ripley and wife Elizabeth sold 200 acres near River Philip which had been granted to Robert Ripley to John Morse for 75 pounds. Robert and Elizabeth were then residing on the property.
On 2 Jan 1847, Robert Ripley and his second wife Bella sold 60 acres to William Ripley for 30 pounds. The property is described as follows: "situated on the Road, leading to said Ripleys where he now resides, Beginning at the corner of a certain stump, from thence up to the road, to a certain Gate, thence down to a certain Willow Tree, thence to the base line of certain, two lots of land owned by Thomas Logan surveyor". Robert's eldest son was William Ripley (1822-1881) and Bella was his second wife Isabella Tait. The transaction was witnessed by John Morse and Edwin C. Morse.
Robert and his first wife Elizabeth are both buried in the Trinity Pioneer Cemetery in Oxford.
