Who's Who on the A. F. Church Map of Fenwick
The location of Andrew C. Ripley is clearly marked on the 1873 A. F. Church map. (See Cumberland County Maps page on this website for information on ordering reproductions of the A. F. Church Map.) On the inside flyleaf of her book, Fenwick 1778-1978, Myrtle Chappell includes a hand-drawn facsimile of the Fenwick section of the Church map which is viewable online. A road originating at Nappan Road runs north and south. This road is marked as "Hwy 2" on the Crown Land Index sheet and is likely the modern Trunk Hwy 2 which runs south from Amherst to Springhill. A road connecting Nappan and Salem runs west to east. This road is marked as Fenwick Road on the Crown Land Index Sheet and is likely today's Fenwick Road. Andrew C. Ripley is located in the lower left quadrant formed by the intersection of these roads. Andrew's "home place" is still in this location today.
Only 4 names appear in the Business Directory for Fenwick included on the A. F. Church 1873 map, but Andrew Ripley is not among those names. However, Andrew Ripley, farmer, is listed as a resident of Fenwick on the 1871 Lovell's Directory for Nova Scotia which is viewable online. In the second "Names" section (not the Halifax Names section) click F for Fenwick and locate page 194.
By comparing the 1873 A.F. Church Map, Lovell's 1871 Directory, and the 1871 census (District number 198 02 Amherst pages 89-92) it is possible to determine who most of these residents were. Residents listed as neighbours on the census also appear as neighbours on the map. The Alex Lewis located just south of Andrew Ripley is his son-in-law married to Andrew's daughter Mary. John C. Smith located to the southwest of Andrew is his son-in-law married to his daughter Hannah. Rufus Ripley further west is also his son-in-law married to daughter Sarah. Squire Pipes located to the north on the east side of the road is Andrew's brother-in-law William Squire Pipes, the brother of his wife Elizabeth B. Pipes. John F. Ripley located to the north on the west side of the road is the son of Henry Ripley. If Andrew were the son of Henry, that would be his brother, but Andrew's parentage is unknown. The two R. Ripleys located further north on the east side of the road are Henry Ripley's son Robert Bean Ripley and Robert Bean Ripley's son Robert William Ripley. John F. Ripley and Robert Bean Ripley may be the John and Robert Ripleys who applied for land grants near Andrew's. The following downloadable document contains a table which shows the comparison of the A.F. Church map, Lovell's Directory, and the 1871 census, providing more detail.
