In honour of Black History Month, I would like to draw your attention to the Halfkenny Homestead. In 1846, William and James Halfkenny purchased 149 acres from the estate of J. F. W. DesBarres. In 1851, they acquired an interest in the Atkinson homestead and also a property in Francklin Manor. William and James were stonemasons who were born in a successful black settlement at Dorcester New Brunswick. Exploring the origin of the Halfkenny family lead to some very interesting reading on the history of black settlement at Dorchester and the story of the amazing Lalia Halfkenny. For details of the homestead and links to references for further reading, see Maccan River West on this website.
