I have fallen down a large but interesting rabbit hole. As you may recall, DesBarres and the Township of Amherst carried on a dispute over the location of the Gmelin line. The property Henry Ripley leased from DesBarres was one of the disputed properties along with several of the so-called 100-acre lots belonging to Amherst. Eric Tattrie on the Cumberland County Genealogy FB group helped me to find the Community Hall (schoolhouse) in Fenwick, so I now know the approximate location of the Gmelin line. In addition, the DesBarres Fonds mentioned in my last post have provided correspondence regarding DesBarres's purchase of his property in Maccan and Nappan from Gmelin and correspondence regarding the very lengthy dispute over the Gmelin line. It seems that the Gmelin line changed at least 3 times over the years depending on who was in charge of conducting the survey. With so much new information I have done some reorganizing. I have simplified the pages for Homestead of Henry Ripley and Mary Fawcett and Landlord DesBarres and Captain Gmelin for easier reading and moved all the technical details to their own new page, The Gmelin Line.
