Many of the Yorkshire farmers who came to Nova Scotia between 1772 and 1774 cited issues with their landlords as a major reason. The tenants of J.F.W. DesBarres in Nova Scotia, including Henry Ripley, William Ripley, Thomas Coates and William Pipes, also had landlord issues. DesBarres acquired 8,000 acres in Maccan and Nappan as a result of a court-ordered sale in 1769. DesBarres returned to England in 1773, leaving his Nova Scotia properties under the control of his abandoned mistress Mary Cannon. I've created a new section about the Ripley Homesteads which includes links to all the homesteads I've researched. There are also new pages on Landlord DesBarres and Henry Ripley's Homestead.

Hi there and thanks! I don't have much on George Noiles. According to Myrtle Chappell he was the first settler in Fenwick. His homestead was just to the west of Henry Ripley's. You may be interested in reading my page on Henry Ripley's homestead. Henry's neighbours to the east were the Goulds and Magdalen was daughter of Peter and sister to the other Goulds. I don't know how Dorion could be a variant of Gould but apparently it is. George Noiles is also one of the tenants mentioned in Captain John MacDonald's report to DesBarres. Just south of Fenwick road there is a side road called the Peterman Noiles road. If you live in Nova Scotia I would highly recommend that you visit the deeds office and search for Noiles' original lease and purchase agreement from DesBarres if you haven't already done so. On the weekend, when I'm on my other computer I'll look to see if I have anything else and respond by email.
