Many Metcalf/Atkinson descendants are aware that the Metcalf homestead west of the Maccan River was inherited by his grandsons James and Amos Atkinson. See Maccan River West on this website. It's less well-known that James and Amos Atkinson bought a second property of 280 acres south of the Nappan River between the homesteads of William Pipes Jr. and George Noils in 1826. James Atkinson sold his half share to James Shipley in 1830, but the heirs of Amos Atkinson retained their half share of the property until 1875. In that year, Peter Etter, husband of Amos's daughter Jane, sold the 140-acre property to spinster Susan Bulmer for $5700. For details see Nappan River on this website. I was unable to discover how 25 year old Susan Bulmer obtained $5700. If anyone knows the answer to this mystery, please let us know!
