I spent most of afternoon at the Cumberland County Genealogical Society where my main objective was to have a close look at the 1761 Chas. Morris survey map of the Amherst Townships lots. On this map, I found the property Robert Ripley leased on the Nappan River marked very clearly: Marshland lots 70-75, a limestone marsh, and upland lots 70-75. Then I got sidetracked talking with Barb Reid about what might have happened to the contents of Robert Ripley and Rebecca Vickery's "Old Place" which were auctioned after the death of Hedley Ripley.
Later in the afternoon I drove out on Highway 2 to Lower Porter Road to take some photos of the area and try to determine the location of Lots 70-75 and the limestone marsh. After exploring around Lower Porter Road, I followed the Nappan Road back toward Maccan and stopped at Higgs road to snap some photos of the original homestead of Henry Ripley and Mary Fawcett. I continued on Nappan Road toward Amherst Point and took photos of the original homestead of William Pipes. There was beautiful afternoon light so I took more photos at Amherst Point and continued to the Old Burying Ground on Southampton Road to try to find the graves of William Pipes Sr. and Jr. who are supposed to be buried behind Robert Ripley and Isabella Beane. I found the gravestones almost impossible to read but perhaps with the help of Susan Hill's cemetery map I will be able to figure it out later.
I also made a quick trip down to Neil Ripley's sugar camp for maple syrup. His maple trees are just starting to turn yellow and red so I did get a bit of a preview of fall colours.
