Picked up a car in Moncton this morning and drove to Amherst to meet my cousin Tannis at the Cumberland County Genealogical Centre. While we were there, Susan Hill and also Barb and John Reid dropped by. We spent some time looking at the files of Ernest Coates and found wills for Henry Ripley and Robert Read. Then we had a whirlwind tour that included a visit to Amherst Cemetery to see the grave of our great-grandparents Robert Salter Ripley and Hannah Elizabeth Ripley. At Christ Church Cemetery we were very fortunate to quickly find the grave of David Pugsley (1759-1841) and Elizabeth Ripley (1767-1841) who was the daughter of the original Robert Ripley from Yorkshire. We also visited the Old Burying Ground to see the graves of Robert Ripley and Isabella Beane, son Henry Ripley and Mary Fawcett, and daughter Jane Ripley and Robert Coates. We tried to visit Michael Fortune Cemetery but it is unfortunately overgrown with long grass and we were not brave enough to face the mosquitoes. In Nappan and Maccan, we were able to see the locations of several Ripley Old Places and the farm of Thomas Coates which is now the Experimental Farm. In Fenwick we located the old homestead of our 2nd great grandfather Andrew Ripley which I had not seen previously and visit the Fenwick Cemetery where Andrew and his wife and several of his children are buried. I will be posting the new grave photos soon.

Happy Canada Day! I can't think of a better way to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Ripley Research website than with an update on the Mayflower Connection through the Vickery family. Although the earlier generations are well documented, it was the last two generations before my great grandmother Rebecca Vickery that were not documented. Susan Hill (what would I do without her!) recently sent me Rebecca Vickery's 1903 obituary which she has discovered while reading old issues of the Amherst Daily News. The obituary mentions her father Jonathan Vickery. I've updated the Vickery Mayflower Connection page and also posted Rebecca's Obituary. It's been a great year with many new leads on old homesteads and land grants. Every time I think I'm about to wrap up the Ripley research and move on to another of my grandparents, another door opens. I'm sure I'll come away from this year's trip with mo |
