Gord Ripley sent me a fantastic map recently. It was hand drawn by Ernest Coates, a resident of the Amherst area and a well-known local genealogist. The map indicates over 60 homes and farms of early residents of Amherst, Maccan, Nappan, and Fenwick. In addition to the locations, the map provides information about all the previous owners of the properties, going back 5 generations in some cases. The Coates map confirmed previous research I had done and also matched the 1873 A. F. Church map and passages from Myrtle Chappel's book Fenwick 1778-1978. With the new version of Google Earth it has been possible to pinpoint the location of many of the properties and create place marks that include descriptions, links, and photos. By using different colours, I will be able to show current landmarks, the Ernest Coates map, and the 1873 A.F. Church Map. Thanks, Gord. What a fantastic way to explore the area this summer!

A second visit to Nova Scotia, combined with a holiday/painting trip to PEI is in the works. I'll be in Amherst July 10-13 if anyone wants to connect. I chose those days because the Cumberland County Genealogical Society is only open 4 days a week and I'll probably spend most of my time there or at the museum. I'm starting to amass a huge list of things to do. At the top of the list is looking at the papers of Ernest Coates. Susan Hill tells me there are 8 files on the Ripleys. I'm hoping that Riptide Fly Fishing will be open one of the days because it would be nice to chat with Danny Ripley about flyfishing the River Philip. I also want to find a few wills, research some land titles, photograph a few graves I missed and visit Andrew Ripley's homestead in Fenwick which I have now located. I missed Springhill last time so a visit there is also on the agenda. I plan to connect with Ripley descendants in the River Phillip area. Hmm…maybe I should have planned to stay a month. |
AuthorHi there! My name is Mallory Burton and I started researching the Ripley family in 2011. I'd describe myself as a careful amateur who's more interested in story than names and dates. I hope you enjoy my website and blog. I also have a public Mallory/Ripley tree on Ancestry with over 4,000 names. To contact me, please comment on any one of my blog posts. Archives
