I recently discovered a very interesting survey completed for Thomas Cochran viewable in the DesBarres Fonds online. Unfortunately the map is not dated. However, a Ripley home is marked on the map. It looks like MCRipley's but perhaps is Mr. Ripley's. If anyone can make sense of this, please let me know.
I believe the 1,000-acre property may have extended as far west as the Denson's Creek marked on the map. Cochran was also a grantee in the original 1765 Amherst Grant, so I think he acquired the marsh properties west of Denson's Creek in that grant. The boundary between Denson's original grant and Amherst's 100-acre lots to the south is also indicated on this survey. I suspect that straight line is now Nappan Road on the east side of Hwy 2.
In addition, the bends in the Nappan River south of Denson's Creek look surprisingly similar to the bends in the Nappan River indicated on the 1816 survey of Henry Ripley's Homestead. If this is a match, Robert and Isabella's Homestead was much closer to Henry's than I had previously thought. And the Karst Topography behind the animal shelter west of Hwy 2 could be the Limestone Marsh mentioned in Denson's original grant.
The Cochran Survey also mentions a property dispute involving Douthwait and Read on lands north of the Nappan River. Coincidentally, Douthwait and Read are the same pair who brought a suit against DesBarres in 1792 regarding the boundary between the DesBarres property and the westernmost 100-acre lots south of the Nappan River.
