Here's another great map from the Nova Scotia Archives Historical Maps Collection. This map is labelled Cumberland Grants but it's actually a map made in 1860 that shows the residents of several communities including Amherst, Maccan, Nappan and Fenwick...like an earlier version of the 1873 A F Church map. Click here to access the map. I found it helpful to right-click the map to download it as an image so I could use the rotation and enlargement tools on my computer. You will also see rotation and enlargement tools at the bottom of the screen on an iPad.
I've made some updates to the Maccan River West page on the DesBarres tenants who settled on the West Bank of the Maccan River. These include the French Village and the Metcalf/Atkinson, Harrison, Welsh, Doiron/Wood, and William and James Halfkenny homesteads. These homesteads are now traced from early leases on the DesBarres lands to descendants on the 1873 A.F. Church map. Kerr Canning wrote a very informative article about the two main roads that lead into Cumberland. One was the road from Parrsboro that came up through the Francklin Grant west of the River Hebert. The other was Cobequid Road, which came up through today's Brookdale. In old deeds and maps, both are referred to as the "Old Post Road". You can view the article online here. While you're on the website, check out some of the other articles.
A few days ago I was browsing in the Historical Maps of Nova Scotia section of the Nova Scotia Archives website and found 14 maps of Amherst ranging from 1764-1992. The 1764 map of Amherst Township is a stunning watercolour version, much better than other maps I have been using. The lot numbers are written very clearly. There are two different Gmelin boundary lines drawn on the map with a note explaining when each was surveyed. If you have a deed for an early ancestor with a lot number on it, this map will be very helpful in locating the various divisions of the lot. I've added a link to the maps on the Cumberland County Map page under Resources and/or you can click on the link above.
