My grandmother, born Alice Malinda Ripley, seemed thoroughly English. She collected English bone china and porcelain figurines, called her tiny fruit bowls "nappies" and served creamed peas on toast. Although I knew that my grandmother had come from Nova Scotia, I'd always assumed that her parents were fairly recent immigrants to Canada. I was very much mistaken.
In 1774, Robert Ripley, his wife Isabella Beane, and six of their children left Battersby, Yorkshire to board the Providence, bound for the colony of Nova Scotia. Like many of the settlers from Yorkshire, they made their home in Cumberland County where they prospered as farmers. My grandmother was born into the 5th generation of Nova Scotia Ripleys descended from Robert Ripley and Isabella Beane. This is their story. |
